What Do We Have Here?

Bernie led the party from the Rock Siren’s feeding room into the large room with the dark glass globe. They made their way to the fallen clerics. Leuven started to rush ahead until Suzie grabbed him by the collar and lifted him off the floor.

“This time, let’s check them together, shall we?” said Suzie with a smile.

“Well, yes, of course, Lady Suzie. I was just making sure it was safe. Who knows what tricks those evil clerics left behind?” said the halfling, legs dangling a foot above the ground.

Lenny lost no time reaching the first body. After digging through pockets and inner sleeve linings, he came up smiling with two small vials.

Suzie returned from where she’d slain the female cleric. She was holding a ruby ring in her hand.

“What does it do?” asked Bernie.

“I’m not sure,” said Suzie. “When I put it on, it felt like I was getting weaker, but I feel fine now. Maybe Xoa or Lenny can figure it out.”

Xoa was leading a young elf toward them. His eyes had a vacant stare. “This is Roderik.”

“You tried to help him?” Bernie asked Suzie.

“Yes, but I’m not sure it did any good.”

“I disagree,” said Xoa. “Originally, he was completely non-responsive. Now I can get him to walk and follow us.”

Suzie shrugged. “I can try my Renewal spell again. His energy is drained, we might have to fill him before he can recover. I’ll try later when I recover my mana.”

“Oh, there’s another one over there.” Suzie pointed to the southeast corner.

Emerging from the shadows, Leuven said, “Don’t bother. He didn’t have anything.”

“Well, I’m sure he doesn’t now,” said Xoa loud enough for everyone to hear.

Bernie looked around and found Lenny standing with his face pressed to the large glass globe in the center of the room. His hands shielding reflections from the room as he tried to peer inside.

“I thought I saw something moving, but now I’m not sure.”

Suzie said, “They were fiddling with that equipment when we arrived. Maybe you can use it to adjust the lighting or something.”

“Good idea,” said Lenny, studying the control panel’s knobs and levers.

Lenny followed several wires leading between the globe, the control panel, and the ceiling above. “It looks like a modulator for the globe. I thought maybe the little globes in the other rooms might flow through this, but this is unique and much larger. The other globes were like little decanters, storing energy temporarily before sending it someplace else. This one’s different. I think the energy source is inside the globe itself.”

“If the priests are using it for something, maybe we should turn off the flow,” suggested Bernie.

Lenny nodded and turned two dials. “I cut off the energy flow. Anything drawing power from the globe isn’t getting it now.”

“This could trigger an attack,” said Xoa. “We should prepare ourselves.”

As they discussed options, Bernie heard a tapping sound coming from the globe. Turning toward the sound, Bernie saw a tiny fist disappear. The other side of the glass was dark and cloudy.
